Freeing up Space on your Computer

With all the e-Learning happening, you are also probably downloading and creating a lot of things. This can eat up alot of space on your laptop. Here are a few tips to clean up some space.

First, how do you check. Click on the apple () on the very upper left of your screen. Then select "About this Mac". In the window the open select storage and it will show you all the info you need. If you click "Manage" It will break it down a little more and also give you recommendations. But here are my recommendations.

  • Empty your download folder from things you don't need anymore. (Do I need 3 copies of the student export???)
    • Consider moving things you want to keep out of your downloads and into a folder.
    • Also think about creating folders in Documents instead of Desktop. This will help keep desktops clean and computer processing information faster.

  • Move completed videos to Google Drive
    • You can always download them again later if need to.
  • Empty your Trash
    • This may happen every 30 days but who has time to wait that long sometimes!

  • Delete unnecessary apps
    • Our computers are relatively clean from the refresh at the beginning of the year, but maybe you downloaded an app that you though you would need. But now discover that you don't... delete it. It's ok. You can download it again if you want later.
  • Old stuff
    • This one is tough, but do you really need it anymore? If you go into Finder and select all files. Then sort the list by Date last opened. Scroll to the bottom and you may discover something that has not been opened since 2015. Do you need it still? Sure this is some stuff there, or maybe it has the wrong date created, but somewhere to check.
I would advise doing this sooner than later, and more frequently. You would hate to be exporting a 20 minute video and right at the end it says you ran out of space.
